Apple harvest will soon be over on our farm. Dave grows over two dozen varieties of apples to supply our market, so there is something for everyone. When we harvest our apples, we put them immediately into our coolers so they will stay fresh as long as possible. The late fall apples are much better “keepers” than apples that are ripe in the summer, but they will keep the best at refrigerator temperatures. Apples in a bowl on the table or counter look very pretty, but we recommend putting out only as many as will be eaten in a day or two. A few days at room temperature shortens the storage life of an apple by weeks.
I’ve been enjoying Snowsweet apples lately. This variety has a punch of flavor, juice, and crispness combined with snowy white flesh and beautiful red skin. I love them to eat fresh, and they would also be lovely added to salads. At our market, we have free samples of apples on our “Sampling Shelf” located on the wall just to the right of the front door as you enter. It’s a great opportunity to try a variety that is new to you.
Starting November 1, we will have new hours at Rennhack Orchards Market. We will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays only, from November 1 through Christmas. The last day we plan to ship apples or gift baskets is December 16, so plan ahead for those great Michigan products to be shipped to Grandma or out-of-state friends! We are open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday through October 31. Of course, you can contact us on our website any time.
